We call her Helen for short. Made entirely of scavenged materials (mainly trash from UC's campus), This piece explores viewer reactions to an obscure creature, tied to the broader issue of ocean pollution caused by corporate greed and government policy. Is she rising out of the depths below, or being pulled into them? Is her demeanor ominous and threatening, or sympathetic? Some may view this creature as the struggling ocean ecosystem personified, while others may see pollution itself, the threat of our own destruction given humanoid form. When displayed, most viewers felt pity towards her, imagining her moving slowly through the waves, bogged down by trash.
