Apart from being the largest painting I've done independently, this work is unique for being my first attempt at an idea I've had for quite some time; creating a physical representation of synesthesia.
Synesthesia is an interesting sensory phenomenon where input from one sense automatically activates another sense. The most well known type of synesthesia, represented here, is when sound creates a visual response - music translates into colors and patterns. Some people may actually see these in their field of vision, but in my case, its just a very strong mental association.
"Overture" depicts one of my favorite albums, The Click by AJR. The album overall has a very deep, floaty vibe to it, so I placed a record player in space, with the album pouring out of it, filling the void. Each distinct section represents a different song on the album, which as you can see, has many different textures, patterns, and colors to it. I often struggled to capture the exact right color, and in some cases I feel that I could've been a bit more accurate, but it is still incredibly satisfying to be able to put to canvas a part of my brain that is so inherent, yet also so hard to describe. It was also incredibly interesting to hear from others who also have synesthesia and are familiar with the album. It's so intriguing how differently we can see the same song.
