As part of my first public performance work, my main concern was with repetitive, ritualistic movement - so naturally I decided to knit on the roof of the DAAP building on the University of Cincinnati's campus. I chose this location in order to explore how people would respond to and interact with someone doing something mundane in an unconventional way, a way that formed a sort of unofficial barrier to the main entrance of the building. It didn't actually impede anyone from entering or exiting, or even take up much space at all, but I found that people were often unsure of how to navigate around it.
This is a condensed version of the full, 10 minute performance. The scarf was about 25 feet long, and was afterwards split into 5 separate scarves and donated to UC Knits, which works with different charities to get knitted goods to people in need.
